02 February, 2000 - (SEASON ONE/S1) The Owls Situation -
ScreamKing (Executive Producer of Soccer All Stars) There is actually a simple explanation for this. First of all they have in the past played Andy Booth up front on his own. Booth is not the greatest striker in the world but is certainly not the worst. I felt sorry for him when he took stick as he struggled to find the net. But who wouldn't? Playing up front on your own is a hard, lonely and frustrating task. Then they go and 'splash' out on summer signings to improve for this season. What I don't understand is why they are paying £20,000 for Danny Sonner of Ipswich and £75,000 of Philip Scott of St. Johnstone. It does not make sense buying players who can't even make the first team of their respected sides and expect them to play as the heart of the midfield. However, these two players are not bad players, just not good enough at this moment of time to be playing in the highest level of football in this country. However, after watching them in a pre-season friendly against Queens Park Rangers in the summer, I had already made up my mind on Sheffield Wednesday. I knew they would struggle and I had a feeling they'd be bottom of the league at this time of the season. They played a full strength side against Rangers and did manage to win the game 2-1. There performance however left me wondering how they are still in the Premiership. The team were all over the place, not playing as a unit and people comment on how they need to sort out their attack when they really need to sort out their defence as well. On top of that the midfield is not of the highest quality. QPR should have won the game easily. It wasn't until the introduction of Ademola Bankole (QPR's reserve keeper) that gave Wednesday the confidence to go on and win the game. How Bankole is a professional football player I'll never in my life know. Sheffield Wednesday leak a lot of goals and struggle to score. This is alarming news for them and their fans. What I've noticed about them is they seem to rely on one player. If they want to move forward and become a real force in the top flight then they need a solid team working together. In the past they've relied on the likes of David Hirst, Chris Waddle, Paolo Di Canio and most recently Benito Carbone. When these players leave, Wednesday have always struggled. There is fear amongst the fans and players as the so called star has gone. When you look at Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea, they've got many stars and when one leaves the team work even harder to play better. Wednesday need more players with higher quality or they need someone who can get them working as a team. From a personal point of view, I'm glad the board have stuck by Danny Wilson, it's rare to see that happening these days. However I don't think he's a good enough manager for them. Looking around there's not much special available except for the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Ruud Gullit who both probably wouldn't want the task of taking them back to the top half of the league.
